Action
Opportunity to act. When a player doesn't realize that it's his turn, the dealer will tell the player that it's his turn.

Ante
The amount of money contributed by players of the game at the beginning of a poker hand.

Burn
Term that describes a dealer discarding the top card from the deck, face down. This is done, before putting out the next community card(s), between each betting round. This protects against players being able to recognize the next card that's used on the board.

Complete Hand
All five cards that defines a hand - a straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, or a straight flush.

House
The place that runs the game.

Inside Straight
A hand containing four cards, except the one in the middle, needed for a straight.

Kicker
An unpaired card that is used to determine the better of two near-equal hands.

Muck
The pile of cards already used in the game that's in front of the dealer.

Open-ended straight
A hand needing one card on either end of four consecutive cards to complete a straight.

Pocket
Your hand that only you can see.

Protect
Preventing your hand from being fouled by a discarded hand or accidentally mucked by the dealer by placing a chip on your hand.

Quads
Four of a kind.

Rank
Numerical value of the card designated by the number

Tell
When a player unknowingly reveals clues or hints about their hand.

Toke
The tip given to the dealer by the winner of the pot and is often the source of a dealer's income.

Trips
Three of a kind.

Variance
A measure of the up and down swings occurring in your bankroll. A higher variance will result in a higher swing.
